Why I'm Running
for Maui Council

Watch Alan explain why he's running, what drives him, and exactly what he'll fight for if elected to the Wailuku seat on the Maui County Council.

Meet Alan Peter Lloyd

I live and work on Maui. I'm honest and not a politician. I have two adult children I'm close with and roots in this community. I'm running because it is too darn expensive to live here, and the Council can do something about that.

Alan Peter Lloyd

Education & Credentials

I hold a Master of Social Work in Policy and Administration and a Master of Science in Acupuncture from the University of Washington, Seattle, reflecting my deep commitment to community health and well-being.

Professional Background

I've worked as a policy analyst, resource manager, housing and program developer, community planner, teacher, social worker, and currently serve as a healthcare provider for Veterans. I know what it means to show up for people every single day.

Community Leadership

I've been an organizer for Hawaiʻi Workers Center, served as Chairperson for a Commission, worked in the City Attorney's Office on Housing & Land Use, and testified frequently at Council.

Small Business & Community

I know small business. I understand the everyday struggles of families trying to stay afloat in one of the most expensive places in the country. Enough ignoring people's struggles.

4 Core Pillars

These are the foundational commitments I will fight for every single day if elected to the Maui County Council.

01

Affordable Housing

More affordable rentals and pathways to home ownership for the workers who keep Maui running.

02

Affordable Preschool for Keiki

Every child on Maui deserves a strong start. Free preschool gives our keiki the foundation they need to thrive.

03

Services for Kūpuna

Our elders deserve dignity and care where they live. Bring services to the kūpuna, not the other way around.

04

Reduce Cost of Groceries

Families shouldn't have to choose between feeding their children and paying rent. We can do better.

15 Missions

Concrete goals, not talking points. These are the specific things I will work to accomplish for the people of Maui.

Affordable Housing

  • Decrease property taxes for kūpuna owner-occupied homes
  • Speed up permitting for 100% affordable developments
  • Keep rents affordable

Keiki & Education

  • Full funding for reading tutors so our keiki read at grade level

Local Food & Farmers

  • Support local farmers, exempt them from property tax

Safety Net

  • Fully fund nonprofit community organizations

Community Safety

  • Implement proven community-based safety solutions from other towns

Wages & Workers

  • Pay childcare workers a liveable wage
  • Pay nursing home workers a liveable wage

Environment

  • Decrease Maui's dependence on oil (currently 60% of electricity)
  • Clean up trash in beach parks

Save Our Democracy

  • No more long lines to vote, more polling sites
  • Protect every Maui resident's right to vote

Recreation

  • Improve pickleball and tennis courts across Maui

Disaster Preparedness

  • Increase access to disaster resources for limited English speakers

Cut Government Waste

  • Cut waste without sacrificing essential services

How We Fund It

Responsible, fair, and straightforward. Here's exactly how we pay for these investments in our community.

Maui has very low property taxes compared to the rest of the country. We will increase property taxes on homes valued at more than $5 million owned by people who do not live on island.

The ultra-wealthy who own luxury properties here but don't contribute to our community day-to-day can afford to pay more. These revenues will fund affordable housing, keiki education, kūpuna services, and the other priorities in this platform.

This is a targeted, fair approach, it protects working families and local homeowners while asking those with the most to contribute a little more.
